How
Important is your headshot?
Not
only is your 8x10 headshot your official business
calling card, but it is also the most vital
career-marketing tool you possess. It is an
unparalleled weapon in your promotional arsenal;
it is literally your ticket in the door. More
often than not, the photograph is your first
introduction to the professionals who will be
selecting you for interviews and auditions—and
hopefully—ultimately casting you.
Your
picture will be one of hundreds that passes
the desk or computer site of a casting director
or agent on any given day. Make no mistake;
commercial acting is a very competitive game.
If you want that agent, casting director, or
director to seriously consider you, you must
grab their attention in the instant they spend
glancing at your picture.
If
your headshot is not successful in doing that,
then your picture is headed for a slam-dunk
into the out basket. Consequently, it’s
imperative to have first-class, professional
photographs. Casting directors, agents, producers,
and directors will schedule you for a meeting
or an interview because of something indefinably
intriguing that they see in your expression,
attitude, look, or smile.
Always
bring an 8x10 picture to each interview or audition;
it’s the only contact source that people
you meet will have to recall you. As your photograph
portfolio grows, you will be able to show the
interviewer a variety of varying, distinctive
representations: body and stunt shots, glamour
or model poses, shots of you in character from
a film or play, with or without facial hair,
and boasting varying hairstyles. In Los Angeles
and many other cities the need to bring a head
shot is no longer common. If they are using
an all inclusive casting program (i.e. LA Casting/Casting
Networks) then all of your information is connected
to your file for the audition. However, it is
always a good idea to have a 8 x 10 picture
handy.
